My imagery My Oil-painting

When I first walked into the mysterious world of Dunhuang, the fabulous paintings and sculptures got my eyes immediately. The splendor and profundity of Dunhuang art shocked me deeply. I visited this holy land of Buddhism many times later as a pilgrim to observe and learn the spirits of it, and determined to promote the grandeur Dunhuang art to the whole world.

After back to my hometown from Dunhuang, I threw myself into the creations of Dunhuang Flying series with my whole heart. For the sake of expressing the profound historical spirit of Dunhuang art sufficiently and met the aesthetic taste of modern people; I adopted western romantic oil painting style instead of only the existing rock painting technique of Dunhuang art and combined it successfully with the traditional Chinese culture and current aesthetic prevalence. The Dunhuang Goddess I created is an embodiment of the Saint, nobleness and goodness of human nature. The same spirit is also expressed in my landscape oil paintings.

The AvalOkiteSVara Goddess used to appear as a male figure in the paintings before the Tang period in China. However, his image gradually became more gentle, feminine and beautiful in later periods after Tang and finally turned into a beautiful, kind woman. We could see that even the culture of Buddhism is also based on the common costumes of the world, just more ideal than the common world.

In the figure creation of the Dunhuang goddess, I combined the face characteristics of western people into my paintings since Dunhuang is along the Silk Road between Eastern and Western world. I also fused the Classic beauty and modern beauty successfully in the Goddess I drew. My Dunhuang oil painting series are not only aimed at promoting religion belief, but also used to describe a tranquil, peaceful and romantic paradise in my deep heart at this busy material world through the concrete image of AvalOkiteSVara Goddess and Feitian Goddess I created.

The costumes and jewelries drawn on Dunhuang fresco are gorgeous, but they lack the hierarchical and stereoscopic perception. After consulting the characteristics of a great deal of Chinese minority dresses, I combined some patterns of modern brocade and self-created patterns together to increase the natural and graceful feeling of Dunhuang Goddess, making their image seems more stereoscopic and modern at the same time. The jewelries of the Goddess are mostly silver with red ruby and sapphire beads on them. I also paid attention to the skin texture of the painting particularly to give the viewer a strong visual shock. The Dunhuang series of my oil paintings are totally different from traditional Dunhuang image in the figures, costume, jewelries and backgrounds. The Dunhuang figures are always characterized as chubby face and body with no extremely big change in their costumes and jewelries in the fresco paintings of Dunhuang Mogao Cave and other Chinese painting works of former artists. However, the Dunhuang Goddesses I created are totally different from the former paintings with peaceful expression and modern beautiful appearance. They also shock the user deeply in heart with pure, amiable spirits and in-depth culture through the fashion visual effects. Dunhuang is a culture where the tradition and creative ideas co-exist. I comprehend and interpret the spirit of Dunhuang from the view of our own era and express the belief of Buddhism from a new angle. My paintings are more original and humanized with immense novel ideas and modern charms. They are not only the perfect image of the real world but also the retrospect and yearn for the ancient traditional culture.

I could say proudly that the Dunhuang Goddess I created is the real goddess in my heart. She is also the soul of the pure truth, goodness and beauty.

Dunhuang is an mysterious book which I could never finished reading. And I will continue reading and deploring it until the end of my life¡

Nice and secluded in far quite freedom

-by Xia Jun

Nowadays, traditional oil painting develops much better in the contemporary society because of the liberal cultural view in China. The sign of spiritual awakening of an artist is to start looking for spiritual maturity and the salvation from the current material world lack of concern for inner essence, and express this longing in his art work. Painting is a life journey pursuing the value of both spirit and soul.

Being well versed in the rules of art development, Zenghao conscientiously concentrates himself on the essence of the oil painting. He observes the nature in an in artistic way to gain inspirations and has developed a colorful and meaningful artistic world in his own heart.

The sanctity series scenery paintings, which are the media to display a new world in Zenghao¡¯s heart through mysterious misty and cloudy views, fuses his own emotional experience into a frozen moment in a tranquil scene. They also represent the longing for a peaceful and tranquil world in his heart and his yearn for some past memories through the concrete image of mist, lotus pond, stone fortress, stone lion and stone bridge.

Zeng Hao¡¯s scenery paintings emphasize the simplicity which expresses a subtle and intangible feeling of elegance and painter¡¯s graceful and mysterious taste. He successfully combines his personal emotion into the scenes he draws to give prominence to both of the beauty of spirit and materials in the scene. There are a lot of ancient traditional oriental architectures in his paintings like the memorial arch represents the pure and chaste of a woman, stone lion and stone bridges etc. he especially prefers painting pure and chaste memorial arch with different shapes and different imageries in his works. The pure and chaste memorial arch was a special and original product of the old China to advocate feudal virtue and Chastity and also a tool to fetter women¡¯s freedom in the past. However, with the development of the society, the feudalism consciousness of the pure and chaste memorial arch faded and gradually becomes the antiquity of the modern society.

Meditating below the tall pure and chaste memorial arches, intoxicated by the beauty of the lotus pond in front of him, Zenghao is looking for the trace of history. In Zenghao¡¯s opinion, pure and chaste memorial arches, especially the ones in south of Sichuan province, are no longer the symbol of Chinese women¡¯s destiny that they were born to be miserably oppressed. Standing beside the cloudy lotus pond, looking like the oriental Holy Virgin, the pure and chaste memorial arches are the mysterious, pure, noble and graceful sign of Chinese women and represents the unshakable belief in love and filial piety of them.

Zeng Hao also introduces the theme of some ancient Chinese poems of Tang and Song period into his painting as well as combining his own deep emotions. Intangible, serene ,beautiful and mysterious poetic romance is shown in the paintings such as ¡¶Fairy Of The Magpie Bridge ¡·depicting the stone lion and stone bridge and the  ¡¶Sparse shadows ¡·depicting a poetry of fence in painting. From ZengHao¡¯s painting, we can feel both the glamour of tradition and the confidence of innovation beyond the tradition. His paintings have the simple and plain peaceable atmosphere which makes people feels happy and gentle instead of pursuing a rebel visual effect on purpose. And since he emphasizes the cultural spirit and essence, his paintings are more thought-provoking.

You could see a painter¡¯s soul from his paintings. ZehgHao is a young painter who has a strong humanistic esthetic standard. He gains happiness from his paintings and fills his paintings with his deep feelings. He releases his feeling in his paintings to reflect his spiritual arcadia which is full of peace, freedom, romance and ease, secluded from the modern society filled with roars. His paintings develop the essence of the Dunhuang series further and agree with the character and psychological structure of Chinese Nation who are good at expressing feeling and ideas while pursuing a peaceful, serene and agreeable life. Since the peace and freedom in his mind, the painters can express his feelings through drawing freely, illustrating a lot of wonderful states of his mind and essence of life.

The pure, beautiful and perfect world in my heart ¨C Dunhuang

Author: Miao Fengchi ¨C Chief Editor of the < Chinese Oil Painting Market>

We are all very familiar with the sign of Dunhuang which Zeng Hao created in his paintings with a profound foundation of Chinese culture. It does not only represent the spirit of truth, kindness and beauty, but also the profoundness of Buddhism culture.

Zenghao has been searching his own goal about art from the culture of Buddhism for many years and achieved a remarkable success in it. His masterful skills to paint realistically provide his works with provoking inspirations and beauty. The pursuing for perfectness and beauty in his work leads the viewers in to a pure land in their heart. Compared with all the current painting styles and expressions languages of art, Zeng Hao¡¯s work has a unique characteristic of providing mysterious religion color onto the female characters he draws, His works masterfully combines the realism and abstract art in the same scene which makes them more substantial. Zeng Hao knows clearly what he is pursuing in the native culture at this era full of various art factions.  He fuses the mysterious Dunhuang Culture successfully with the modern aesthetic tastes and comes up with a unique and innovative way to represent the beauty of the Dunhuang art vividly to modern people. He also combines the western oil painting techniques with Chinese paintings skills masterfully together in his works, both preserving the essential spirit of traditional Dunhuang art and constructing his own sign of Dunhuang art. He neither copy the traditional art totally nor just facsimile a woman¡¯s image in real life. He uses the modern art language to present the perfectness and beauty of the ancient Dunhuang art. Instead of restrained by religion boundary, he retrospect the traditional art of one thousand years from the position of modern people, injecting the fashion into the ancient art and reform it into a euphonic melody to call for the pure beauty in people¡¯s hearts. Since Zeng Hao¡¯s painting style is very unique, his paintings of Dunhuang series has a very promising future and the prices of his work keeps on rising in Dutch auctions.  During the spring Dutch auction in Guangzhou in January 2005, the painting work <Dancing Goddess> of Zeng Hao grabs everyone¡¯s heart in the auction since its transcendental beauty and sold out at the high price of 41,8000 RMB after intense competitions of a lot of bidders. The other work of him: < Buddha holding the lotus > also sold a good price of 25300 RMB a few minutes later. Getting such a good price at his first auction with the close attention and continue bids from the famous auction company of Jiuge, jiahuan and Pacific Ocean, which is very rare for tens of thousands of other current artists, provides Zeng Hao¡¯s works a promising future to win more and more attention with higher prices. I believe that with the combining merit of both classic art and current fashion, the Dunhuang series of Zeng Hao¡¯s painting will definitely achieve much more successes in later Dutch auctions.

  The forever charm of Dunhuang

-A few opinions about Zeng Hao¡¯s Dunhuang Oil Painting works.

Author: Wang Bianji-Director Of Dun Huang Creative Centre OF Arts Association In China.

As one of the members of the Dun Huang Creative Centre OF Arts Association in China, Zeng Hao shares three common characteristics with all of us in this center: first: keen interest about Dunhuang art. Second: distinctive Dunhuang art style. Third: excellent painting skills. Obviously Zeng Hao is one of the most outstanding members of our centre.

Born in city Zigong of Sichuan province, Zeng Hao developed a huge interest in painting under the influences of his artist father. Although the financial conditions of his family are bad at that time and Zeng hao encountered numerous difficulties in his later life, he never gives up his courage and determination to pursue further in the art world. He also got a chance to enter the Sichuan Art College to improve his painting skills there. Currently there are a lot of young Chinese artist involved themselves into the various factions of modern arts. For Zenghao, since his sentimentally attachment to the native culture, He keeps his own wise judgment and understanding about art in his artistic creation. He chose the classic art as his art style which is not very fashionable and persists in it for a long time in a unique way.

Zeng Hao went to Dunhuang to observe and study the grandiose Dunhuang art for his first time at the beginning of the 1990s. He was totally shocked by the splendor and profundity of Dunhuang art in the Mogao Cave and visited there a lot of times later as a pilgrim of Dunhuang. The Dunhuang art has been developed into various styles through thousands of years of creation and promotion of the Chinese artists in history. Since Zeng Hao used to study the traditional Chinese painting in his earlier age, he inherited the excellent merit of traditional art to express the spirit through material images. Zeng hao was also influenced deeply by a lot of great Europe Renaissant artists especially a French artist Gustave Dor¨¦. Gustave Dor¨¦ absorbed a lot of exotic art styles into his illustration paintings for the Bible. He created his own system of expressing happiness, angriness and sadness and used this system successfully to generate some typical characteristics for the models in his work, while Zeng Hao also uses the different gestures and expressions of the characters in his painting to organize different scenes of stories. His paintings always give prominence to the spirits of the main characters to express the theme of his work more powerfully. Each Dunhuang Goddesses in his painting has her own characteristics and verves to viewers. Those works fuses the traditional art techniques and western oil paintings skills successfully and break the old boundaries of art bravely. Zeng Hao¡¯s works are full of imaginations and vitalities. For example, the paintings of <Lucky Angel> and < Singing and Dancing in a Peaceful World> absorbed the creation method of Religion arts and the expression method of the Dunhuang art, showing that Zeng Hao has accumulated abundant experiences in both fields. The Dunhuang art is an art form of creating deity in one¡¯s heart and the image of deity comes from the normal people of our lives. For example, the singing goddess of Zeng Hao¡¯s paintings represents the mortal feelings of normal people through the image of sacred goddess. Zeng Hao is also very aware of the depiction of eyes in his paintings. He observes and abstracts the most beautiful expressions of eyes he saw in life and expresses them vividly in his paintings. The famous Dunhuang scholar Liu Bing said: you could see one¡¯s spirit from his appearance, just like you could see one¡¯s thought from his eyes. Zeng Hao always connects the spirit of a character closely to her eyes which makes his paintings standing out from the traditional Dunhuang arts with vivid expressions of the characters and profound culture backgrounds.

The motivation of art creation comes from the real passions in heart. When I stood in front of the Dunhuang series of Zeng Hao¡¯s Paintings and viewed his excellent works of <Melody from Heaven> and < Dunhuang Dancing> again, when I was listening to his narration of how he felt when he first saw the frescos in Dunhuang, I could see his firm determination to pursue his dreams. I sincerely hope that Mr. Zeng Hao could keep this enthusiasm perpetually to achieve even greater successes in his later life.
